The Day of Poltava

Poltava citizens celebrate the Day of the city on September 23. The city was founded in 1174. Traditionally, the celebration is timed to the Day of Liberation of Poltava from Nazis, what happened in 1943. Poltava - spiritually rich city, and by tradition the holiday begins with prayers and the ringing of the church denominations, which represented in the regional center, as well as the laying of flowers to the fallen soldiers-defenders at Soldier's Memorial of Fame. Also in these days held a festival of flowers.

Poltava is known not only warmth and friendliness of the local people, but also the heroic confrontation of 1709 troops of the Swedish King Charles XII - Battle of Poltava, which became a turning point in European history.

It is believed that the name is derived from the nearest city waterway - Ltava River. Also, Oltava is the name of a tributary Vorksla River.
