Zip codes

Zip code as a means to facilitate the delivery of correspondence to the addressee and as a way to reduce the number of lost correspondence appeared in the USSR in 1932, and for seven years was of the format "number-letter-number". For example, the index 14У2 deciphered as follows: У - Ukraine, 14 - Kyiv (the numbers provided from 11 to 20), the last number indicates the area of the city. A pointer index was developed in Kharkiv (Ukraine's capital at that time), but with the outbreak of the Second World War the system was abolished.

It is noteworthy that the zip codes of Ukraine like the most of the rest of the world based on a German invention, which appeared in 1962. Oddly enough, but In fact the correspondence exists many centuries, and the index appeared only in the XX century, and only in the second half of the XX century zip found a most convenient and accurate modern format. To date, this format is used in 192 countries - members of the Universal Postal Union, which includes almost all countries of the planet. Alphanumeric index remained only in a few countries: in Argentina, in Bermuda, in Brunei, in United Kingdom, in Venezuela, in Canada, in Malta, in Netherlands and in Finland. It is noteworthy that in most English-speaking countries first comes the name of the destination and then the index. In Europe, usually the other way around - first there is the zip code, and then the name of the city. The European code starts with a capital letter (or two letters) which is the name of the recipient country.

Until recently, the index code was fitting to the die area code. It was a stencil, the figures in which (according to the example that was below the stamp) were the machine-readable data. This way speeds up the sorting of mail. However, new technologies have eliminated the outdated system: the modern reader programs are able to recognize handwritten numbers.

The index of cities in Ukraine has a 5-digit format. In this section of our site you will find the postal codes of cities of Ukraine by the desired address.
