Belgorod-Dnestrovsky fortress (Akkerman fortress) - c.Belgorod-Dnestrovsky

Belgorod-Dnestrovsky fortress (the Akkerman fortress) - is a medieval fortress in Belgorod-Dnestrovsky city in Ukraine. It is one of the largest in Ukraine, and it was perfectly saved.

Historical-architectural monument of XIII-XV centuries. It was constructed on the place of an antique city Tir. From three side it is surrounded by a ditch of 13 m width, and initial depth of 20 m, from the north it is washed by waters of Dnestrovsky estuary. The total length of the walls is over 2 km. The walls and towers height is from 5 to 15 m, the thickness is from 0,8 to 5 m. Between curtain walls there were 34 towers, 26 of them are saved. In the fortress there is a citadel. Nowadays the fortress territory is the memorial estate.

Scientists refer the fortress occurrence to the Moldavian period in history Belgorod-Dnestrovsky's history (the end of XIV century). At that time the fortress was the part of the strengthened system, covering the ways deep into of the Moldavian princedom. Suchavskaya, Nyametskaya, Hotinskaya, Hmelevskaya and Tsetsinskaya fortresses also concern to this group of strengthenings.

After the Turkish siege of 1420 the serious defensive works in the fortress followed, which were made under supervision of Podolia governor Geldigold by means of Lithuanian prince Vitovt.

New works on fortress reorganisation were developed in 1440 at Stefan II. Then it was strethened in 1454 at Alexendrel: military leader Stanchul equiped existing walls with powerful adaptations for guns. Its definitive shape the fortress will get as a result of Turkish reorganisations in XVI-XVIII centuries.
